Programs

MRC strives to be a safe place for our clients, staff, interns, and volunteers. Wellness is a concept that is integrated into all areas of our work. Many refugees and immigrants experience unfavorable conditions, including separation and losses. These types of experiences and adjustment-related stresses are among the many challenges faced by immigrants and refugees when moving to a new country, accepting a new culture, and accepting a different way of life. The Cultural Humility approach that we practice at MRC is interactive and enables us to be able to see from each other’s perspectives, understand each other’s backgrounds, and learn from our clients who have the best understanding of their own lives.

We embrace multiculturalism by constantly developing cross-cultural interactions and supporting cultural knowledge and skills and believe that all cultures, races, and ethnicities deserve acknowledgment of their differences. We know that sharing knowledge and resources with our clients about all aspects of their lives such as health, education, work, and social networks is a huge benefit to them and their families. Everyone needs to have the opportunity to work and live as healthy as possible, manage their physical and mental health affordably, and do it all with the highest level of care and services. This includes easy access to information and preventative healthcare, access to resources and opportunities to develop a career path, and engagement in future planning. Thus, we listen, and we learn from our clients. We learn about them and about ourselves and how to serve our community in a better way while building resilience.

To assist refugees and immigrants and help them become active participants in their communities, the MRC supports several programs and provides sustained support and assistance designed to address the variety of needs with focus on carrier-readiness and employment opportunities, community engagement, and health and wellness of underserved population.

The MRC can help with developing referrals to social service agencies by providing essential information and resources. Health Equity Learning Pathway (HELP) for Refugees & Immigrants

(pending program)

Our mental and physical health can make it difficult to find a job, stay at work or return to work. The “Health Equity Learning Pathway” (HELP) project for Refugees and Immigrants will build upon and enhance our “Path to Employment” and Social Wellness & Health Programs and teach immigrants and refugees how to work and live in the US with mental and physical wellbeing in mind. This will be a culturally humble education and resource program offered to immigrants and refugees who are limited by their knowledge of the English language and other barriers preventing accessing quality care.

The HELP program will provide wellness education on topics such as awareness and management of chronic diseases, injury and violence prevention, behavioral/mental health, nutrition, and assertive communication. This program will cover several dimensions of wellness including physical, emotional, intellectual, social, environmental, and occupational to build a healthy and profound living environment.
